Word (.docx) · what this error means and every free fix to try first

The file yourfile cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents.

What's actually wrong

This is Word's blunter cousin of the 'unreadable content' error — the file's internal structure (the zip container itself, not just the XML) is damaged, so Word gives up before even attempting recovery. Common causes: interrupted downloads, email attachment mangling, USB drives removed mid-copy.

Free fixes — try these first

  1. Try Open and Repair: File → Open → select file → arrow next to Open → Open and Repair.
  2. Re-download or re-transfer the file if you got it from email/USB — the original source copy may be fine.
  3. Rename a copy from .docx to .zip and try double-clicking it — if it opens as a zip, look inside word/document.xml; your text is in there.
  4. Try LibreOffice, which sometimes opens containers Word rejects.

If the free fixes fail

When the zip container itself is broken, Word's repair almost never works — the file needs structural surgery.
